It’s become increasingly apparent that when people picture “the 90s”, a lot of folks are actually picturing the span circa 1999-2003, and now I’m wondering how many other decades’ pop-culture images are temporally out of whack with the actual span of years they purport to represent.

(And for that matter, what we’re actually supposed to call the cultural zeitgeist of the span from 1994-1998, since apparently it’s not “the 90s”, but even the broadest sense of “the 80s” doesn’t stretch far enough to cover it.)
