Instead of banning a race, make it extremely rare and popularly hated. It will scare off most players, but the ones that really want to play it will still do so and it’s also really interesting

Ok, story time!

In the Westmarches world I DM in, my nation very much hates Dragonborns and Dragon kind. They were under draconian rule by dragons, but once the newer government moved in, they hunted them out of the country. They tend to hide in the North, where giants and dwarves live, or the South, demon territory.

Then, a player asked to play as a dragon. I was going to say no, but they clarified they can’t fully transform since they gave birth to their daughter and that they are a member of the royal family of the nation, so they can be hidden.

And my god I love this character. Her husband, the players other character named Kreig, created items and payed for her to go on this adventure to see her brother, and having a dragon in the party is great material to work with. They fear the dragon part of her, as well as the “insane Castle bloodline” she’s a part of.

Don’t limit your players creativity. Just let them do as they please. It often turns out better.
