The research, led by the National Institute of Psychiatry, interviewed 250 transgender people and found that it is not a mental disorder as once believed. Apparently, distress and impairment are the two essential characteristics of a mental disorder, and they found transgender people can experience some distress but not because they are transgender, but because of social rejection and violence.

You scoff, but if we don’t state the obvious, the bigots read into the unknown and insert all manner of incendiary stupidity.
Agree, and also not to be that guy, but this is ultimately how certain science publications and academic institutions work.
I mean being gay was considered a mental disorder as well, and for it to be accepted and ruled that it’s not a mental disorder they had to do research for it. I mean not it just seems ridiculous, but back then and, sadly, in certain areas it is still seen as a disorder.
Ultimately though this is a good thing even though it took a while.
