this is a not so friendly reminder that you shouldn’t use the term hispanic to describe latino people specially if you aren’t latino, it groups us with our oppressors it literally means ‘from a spanish speaking country’ and not only does spain fall in the same category as us, but you’re also excluding brazil and non-spanish speaking countries
non-latinos can reblog this
#and exclude indigenous cultures who dont speak a word of spanish#and try to preserve their culture from spanish traditions (via zewko)
I think it’s also important for people from Latin American countries like Argentina, Chile and Uruguay to recognize that most of us are directly descendants from Europeans and are very white passing so to say you are latino may not be the most respectful thing in certain environments cause you were never prejudiced against in the first place. We do get some shit for not being from the “developed countries” and that whole thing where people think Uruguay is next to Nigeria and Pakistan (i swear people havent seen a map and can’t tell Australia from Antarctica), but we get no shit for the way we look, so it’s important to understand that privilege.
